The established BI platforms have added natural-language layers: Tableau has AI explanations and Pulse, Power BI has Copilot, ThoughtSpot answers questions in plain language. The point is to let people who cannot write SQL ask questions directly.
A newer group works on the data itself rather than the dashboard. Hex provides collaborative notebooks with an AI toolkit, Julius AI and Rows let you interrogate a spreadsheet conversationally, and Mode Analytics writes SQL from a conversational prompt. These are most useful when you are exploring, not reporting.

For exploration, yes, and it is genuinely useful. For reporting, you still want governed metric definitions — because a natural-language answer inherits every ambiguity in how your metrics are defined.
It helps a great deal. Natural-language analytics performs far better over well-modelled, documented tables than over raw operational data, and the semantic layer is where most deployments succeed or fail.
No. It automates model selection and tuning. Knowing whether the problem is well-posed, whether the data is representative and whether the result is meaningful remains human work — and it is the part that determines whether the model is useful.
